What Is The Best Fireproof Safe For Home Use?

We all work hard for our money.

With the dollar devaluation and inflation, we have to be smarter with that money and invest and save wisely.

Some of us, ahem, don’t like to put all of our eggs in the basket known as banks and might be looking for options to safely store our valuables at home.

An old $40 Sentry safe from Lowe’s just won’t cut it. A robber could easily whisk it off and a fire would definitely ruin most of the valuables inside, especially paper dollars.

So what is the best purchase when it comes to a fireproof home safe?

I’ve been researching this very question for a while, and wanted to share my conclusion with you.

Fire, Water, and Bandits - Oh My!

The first thing I asked myself was, “What am I trying to protect my valuables from?

I decided it was primarily:

FIRE - Wildfires in Washington State, especially here in northeast Washington, are a very real threat, but if a wildfire makes it to my valuables safe, then something is probably bad wrong. Besides, I don’t know of any home safes that could withstand the duration of a wildfire. But, house fires are a definite concern, and something more easily recovered from. The safe I decided on can withstand 1,700 degree Fahrenheit temperatures for an hour. Unlike a wildfire, a house fire is usually put out within the hour.

WATER - The spectrum of possibility here is huge: freak flash floods, leaks that just happen to drip onto your stored valuables long enough to ruin documents and cash before getting noticed, or the big Cascadia megaquake happens and you’ve got a tsunami coming your way (that’s real life talk fyi)… water can most certainly ruin a lot of valuables, especially paper ones.

GOOD OL’ ROBBERS - The filthy scoundrels. Willing to put effort into risking their lives for some unknown amount of loot, but not willing to just… I don’t know, get a job? This is a definite concern for anyone storing valuables at home.

The Best Home Safe

Now to get to the crux of the biscuit (for anyone reading who’s a Frank Zappa fan)…

To address all of these concerns, I’ve decided on the SentrySafe SFW123DSB Fireproof Safe and Waterproof Safe.

Let’s look at the specs:

  • Can endure up to one hour of 1700 degree Fahrenheit temperatures while keeping interior temps safe enough to preserve valuables (even documents and cash)

  • Can withstand a 15-foot fall and still remain closed

  • It’s verified for 24 hours of protection in water 8 inches deep

  • Security: features a dial combination with backup secondary key system, four live-locking bolts, steel construction, pry-resistant hinge bar, shelf, and bolt down hardware, not to mention it weighs over 80 pounds so isn’t the easiest thing to run off with

This is definitely a leveling up for us, and I feel really good about it.

Do you have any thoughts or recommendations on keeping valuables in your home safe from threats?

Take care everybody ~
